The key to healthy soil on the farm and in the farm is organic matter. At the Hefty garden crop residue was removed from the beds and set aside. The soil in the beds were turned and then broadcast seeded to buckwheat. The residue was then returned to the bed to conserve moisture for the buckwheat seed. The buckwheat will be cut just prior to seed set in early August. Then the buckwheat residue will be allowed to dry. After drying the buckwheat residue will be worked into the soil. A combo of fall rye and hairy will be seeded for overwintering and early spring growth. Feed the soil feed the plants. Two beds were herbicide treated to then be planted to buckwheat in a couple of weeks. TWO
